A recent announcement from the Scottish Government confirmed that the Local Authorities would continue to be the only approved Verifiers of Building Standards in Scotland.
In England and Wales the role of Approved Inspector, to assess compliance of new residential dwellings with the Building Regulations, has been open to the private sector for some years now. Some of the Approved Inspectors who currently operate in Engalnd and Wales had wanted to expend their operation in to Scotland and had sought to become Verifiers (Scottish equivalent of Approved Inspectors) of the Building Standards (Scottish equivalent of Building Regulations).
The process included a public consultation during 2011 on the proposed opening up of the current process to private sector Verifiers. Almost 200 responses were received of which nearly 75% did not support the proposed change.
The Minister for Local Government and Planning, Derek Mackay, said: "Following consultation, I have decided that Local Authorities are still best placed to protect the public and to deliver the Government's key building standards objectives." Click here to read the full news release.
